Industry News: Proud Foundational Supporters of Indigenous Pathways Program

Journey Engineering Corporation, in collaboration with Juno Engineering Canada Inc., has partnered with the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary as a foundational #supporter for their Indigenous Pathways Program (https://schulich.ucalgary.ca/future-students/undergraduate/admissions/indigenous-pathways-program). We are committed to proactive engagement and building successful relationships with #Indigenous people, businesses, and communities.

This is one of the only #university programs in #Canada focused on increasing Indigenous inclusion and participation in engineering and reducing barriers to entry. As a Calgary-based company, we are proud to actively support a #local initiative that we truly believe in and look forward to seeing the success that it will bring in the coming years.

We had the privilege of hosting a Lunch & Learn session for a group of students currently enrolled in this Program. Some of our team, including intermediate/senior engineers as well as leadership members, shared #career insights, words of wisdom, and a glimpse into the #exciting challenges that lie ahead for the #engineering professionals of tomorrow. It was inspiring to connect with these bright minds; we look forward to continuing these meaningful conversations.

At the end of the session, we had an open Q&A. We’d like to highlight some great student questions!

❔ What #advice do you have for first and second year students that are looking to apply for summer student positions, but are nervous because they lack experience?
➡ When we interview students, we are really looking for a good fit within the Journey culture which includes #enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. We don’t expect students to have a long resume of experience!

❔ Do you have any existing partnerships with Indigenous Communities?
➡ Journey is always looking for opportunities to work with and support Indigenous communities. The nature of our work takes us all over remote and rural areas of Alberta where maintaining a good standing #relationship with local communities is essential to what we do.

❔ How much time do Journey employees spend in the #field?
➡ We can’t emphasize enough the importance of working in the field and the #benefits that this will have on your career and personal growth. Time in the field depends on your role; Junior and Intermediate employees could expect to spend a significant amount of their time in the field, but as you become more senior, you tend to spend less time in the field and more time in the office. Our Vice President Scott Herbst, P. Eng. mentioned that he now spends less than 5% of his time in the field, but misses it immensely!

Thank you for inviting us; we are excited to continue #supporting the Indigenous Pathways Program. We encourage engineering students to stay curious and ask questions – keep learning on your #journey in school and look for inspiration in the #community!
