South Wapiti Cells 4-7 Design and Construction

Unnamed Oilfield Waste Services Client | Grande Prairie, Alberta

Between 2020 and 2024, Journey had the privilege of providing engineering and project management for the design and construction of landfill cells 4 to 7, along with a staged cap at the South Wapiti Landfill, approximately 25 km south of Grande Prairie, AB. Since 2020, this project has encompassed almost 100,000 m² of cell development with a landfill capacity of over 1,750,000 m³, 40,000 m² of capping, and over $13 million in capital investment.

This project demonstrates Journey’s ability to earn the trust of the entire client team and complete ongoing, repeat work at a site. Through continuous engagement with operations and client stakeholders, this repeat work has allowed collaborative master planning of cells, capping, access roads, tipping pads, leachate collection, stormwater systems, and waste placement – all of which Journey has then completed detailed project work on.

Long-term partnership and collaboration enabling proactive problem-solving!

Our long-term commitment has enabled us to proactively take ownership of and solve challenges before they impact the project. Our engineers on site have managed a shortage of clay liner materials through daily tracking, forecasting, and close coordination with contractors. Upon encountering field conditions that differed from as-builts on an early cell tie-in, our engineers were able to ‘go with the flow’ and redesign the leachate extraction system under tight timelines ensuring no delays in construction or compromise in performance.
